Waistcoats are traditionally worn with a tie over a dress shirt and under a formal suit coat, contributing tot he development of the classic three-piece suit style.The inner jacket garment that eventually developed into the waistcoat was introduced in mid-1600 by the court of King Charles II of England. During this early time period, men’s undercoats and inner waistcoats were the same lengths. In the first part of 1700s men typically had a silk suit in which the coat, waistcoat, and breeches all were made of the same fabric.Toward the middle of the century, waistcoats were longer in length and traditionally covered a good portion of the breeches. By the late 1770s the waistcoats were much shorter, ending around the hip area. Fabrication for waistcoats fluctuated, with formal wear-waistcoats typically matching the outercoats and pants, and more casual styles featuring a contrasting waistcoat. The shorter-style waistcoat for men began emerging in the latter part of the 1700s and dominated garments in the nineteenth century. The shorter waistcoats style was traditionally worn under the coat and began the look of what developed into the male three-piece suit. The waistcoats transformed into what we consider vests and are still worn in the twenty-first century.
